inst

1971 – 2011

The Institute of History, Archaeology and Ethnography (IHAE), the Branch of the Russian Academy of Science, is the unique and the single Research Institu¬tion not only in Russia but also worldwide. The staff of the Institute is conducting the investigations based on their profound knowledge and huge amount of experience in history, archaeology, ethnography, culture, policy and economy of the Russian Far East. Thus, as they are well aware of the past and present events of our region they can also predict the future of the remotest areas of Russia and also neighboring China, Japan and Korea.

Under the leadership of the Far-Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Science (RAS ) the Institute successfully deals with all Russian specialists and foreign colleagues that are interested in the history of our region. The Institute was formed on July 1, 1971, and since this moment the staff has been carrying out scientific investigations in the following aspects: archaeology and ethnography of the Pacific Russia and neighboring territories, the history of Russian impact on development of the region, history and culture of China, Ja¬pan and Korea, foreign relationships with Asia Pacific countries and security challenges in this area. All these trends are wildly highlighted in the scientific re¬searches of mutual and individual programs of our staff that consists of almost 80 highly-qualified personal ranging from more than 50 Candidates of Science to 10 Doctors of Science, Full Professors.

The major aims of the Institute are supposed not only to conduct traditional scientific investigations and training of highly skilled and self-motivated team players but also large-scale promotion of historic regional heritage and to contri¬bute to further striving for perfection of genuine humanitarian education in schools and Universities of the region and eventually to create the possibility to strengthen the position of our country in the Pacific Asian area and to cooperate fruitfully with the countries of Eastern Asia and Asia Pacific Region. We are completely convinced that the keys to success are based on trust-worthy and fair cooperation, developing mutual interests and comprehension that is sure to help to overcome historical contradictions, suspicion, hatred and hostility otherwise all the talks concerning the peaceful climate in the region and the transformation of it into the flourishing area will be senseless. Our major target is to make our projects come true and we are always ready to cooperate with the concerned partners that share our points of view and are eager to support us.

THE BACKGROUND OF THE INSTITUTE

On November 26, 1970, The Presidium of the Academy of Science of the former USSR passed the decision to establish the Institute of History, Archaeology and Ethnography of the Peoples of Far- East in Vladivostok . Less than in a year on July 1,1971, the IHAE was founded on the base of a small Department of His¬tory and Archaeology that had been formed in 1954 and was a subdivision of the Branch of Russian Academy of Science. The first Head of the Institute was Academician Andrei Ivanovich Krushanov. Due to his boundless enthusiasm and great efforts over the span of his 20 years’ career the Institute of History was shortly recognized as the centre of Far-Eastern Science. A.I. Krushanov gave the green light to a great number of scientists and lecturers who represent his¬torical science in our region working not only at the Institute but practically in each one located in the Far-East.

Since 1991 Dr.Sc. Full professor Victor Lavrentyevich Larin has been the head of IHAE and in his early yeas of leadership he had to encounter a lot of difficul¬ties due to the policy of crucial reforms in our country that pursued him to reno¬vate the old comprehension of social and cultural aspects and economical de¬velopment on the whole and determine new trends in the field of their studies and adopt different approach to further scientific investigations. It is in his spirit that he managed to kindle a spark in new areas that were not even considered to be of extraordinary importance from the outset.

The staff of the Institute takes proud of the fact that a lot of eminent and out¬standing scholars worked with them during different periods and among them we should mention the following Doctors and Candidates of Historical Sciences that are not only well-known in our country but also abroad: Zh.V. Andreeva, A.R.Artemyev, A.P Derevyanko, N.V.Kocheshkov, Yu.A. Sem, F.V.Solovyev, I. G.Stryuchenko, E.V.Shavkunov, V.G.Shebenkov and Candi¬dates of Historical Sciences: V.D.Lenkov, N.V.Kile, G.A. Otaina and the others.

MAJOR SCIENTIFIC TRENDS

The scholars of IHAE contributed a lot to revitalizing the vivid picture of forming and development of the historical civilization in the territory of the Russian Far-East and neighboring areas.

IHAE is majoring in particular archaeological studies and scientific hardships of research as well. Among the key challenges are the transition from Paleolithic period to Neolithic time in the northeastern part of Asia, building up of ancient settlements, types of migration and adaptation of the native inhabitants to their original places of living and the role of Primorye as an outlying district of me¬dieval states — the Bohai, Jin, Dong Xia. Annual archaeological expeditions of IHAE researches resulted in discovery of 1.5 thousand of archaeological re¬markable finds, excavation of more than 100 settlements and burial tombs. The ancient state Bohai (698-926 AD) is considered to be of great significance as well as the Eastern Xia state (1215-1233 AD) proved its existence on the territory of Primorye as it had separated from the Golden Empire oftheJurchen.

Our researches also managed to discover and investigate the sites of Russian pioneers in Primorye and Transbaikalye and wrote the history of the Far East de¬velopment during XVII-XVIII centuries. They keep on groundbreaking work at do¬zens of archaeological sites having launched the comprehensive program that will help to ensure the preservation of historical heritage of early civilization in the vast territories of this region.
